SUMMARY:Constructing Science Through Everyday Interactions
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 29: 6pm to 7pmat the EARTH Nature Center\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by David Sobel\, professor in the Department of Cognitive and Psychological Sciences at Brown University. \n\n\n\n\nJoin us at the Nature Center for a free presentation focusing on how everyday interactions between a child and their parents shapes the child’s problem solving skills. \nThe fundamental goal of childhood is learning. Children discover their world by exploring\, interacting\, and connecting with the people around them. David Sobel’s research focuses on how preschoolers and children in early elementary school use these processes to learn science. In this talk\, he will share evidence showing that even before children start kindergarten\, they possess sophisticated capacities to reason scientifically\, and during elementary school\, parents play a vital role in fueling their curiosity and reasoning. \nThis past summer\, Professor Sobel’s research group had the privilege of conducting research at Southwick’s Zoo. Their latest findings show that the ways parents play with their children when asked to learn something new reveal natural teaching strategies that strengthen children’s scientific reasoning. These benefits stick with the child even when they are later problemsolving on their own.  \nAbout the Speaker: David Sobel received his BA in Psychology and Computer Science at Swarthmore College\, and a Ph.D. at University of California\, Berkeley. He has been a professor in the Department of Cognitive and Psychological Sciences at Brown University for over 25 years. He has published the books Cognitive Development in Museum Settings: Relating Research to Practice (Psychology Press\, 2016) and Constructing Science: Connecting Causal Reasoning to Scientific Thinking in Young Children (MIT Press\, 2022) as well as over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles on child development. His work is funded by the National Science Foundation of the United States. His favorite animals at the Zoo are the cheetahs. \nFREE for EARTH members and non-members. Please RSVP below se we have an idea of how many attendees to expect. \nIf you have questions about this program\, please email us at earth@earthltd.org or call our center at 508-203-6944.

SUMMARY:Pet Meets Baby
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, November 7: 10:00am to 11:00amat the EARTH Nature Center\n\n\n\n\nPresented by Jane Greco Deming Animal Rescue Rhode Island Humane Education Consultant and Program Manager \n\n\n\n\nWhether you are pregnant\, adopting\, or fostering a child\, this workshop will help you learn important steps to prepare your dog\, cat\, and other pets for the arrival of a new baby. You’ll hear practical tips\, helpful strategies\, and trusted resources that can be implemented right away. Preparing your pets early greatly increases the chances of a smooth and successful transition for everyone in your household. \nFor many families\, pets are truly the “first baby” and are accustomed to receiving constant attention and affection. The arrival of a newborn naturally changes routines\, and pets can sense and react to these shifts. It’s also important to understand that infants appear very different to animals—new sounds\, movements\, and smells can be unfamiliar and confusing. Even the most loving and well-behaved pets are naturally curious\, making thoughtful preparation essential. \nBy participating in this workshop\, you’ll learn how to safely desensitize your pet(s)\, manage interactions\, and set healthy boundaries during times when attention or access needs to be limited. You’ll also receive guidance on helping your child grow up pet-friendly\, along with many other practical tips. Attendees will receive take-home materials for future reference. \nAccording to the CDC\, the most vulnerable age for children around dogs is the first 0–6 months of life. This workshop provides valuable tools to help create a safer\, more harmonious home during this important time—don’t miss the opportunity to prepare with confidence. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is ideal for expectant parents\, couples\, grandparents\, caregivers and foster parents. \nThis is a presentation for adults. Pets cannot be brought to the presentation. \n\n\n\nTicket Pricing:EARTH Member: $5*Non-Member: $10 \n*EARTH MEMBER DISCOUNT: When purchasing your ticket\, enter the email address connected to your EARTH membership as a promo code. Must be a current member\, discounts cannot be applied retroactively. \nIf you have questions about this program\, please email us at earth@earthltd.org or call our center at 508-203-6944.
